Wonderful Wessex Winter Contest
Saturday 24th November
The Verwood Concert Brass organisation had a wonderful day at the Wessex Brass Band Association 62nd Winter Contest.
There was plenty of silverware up for grabs and quite a few came VCBs way.
Verwood Concert Brass conducted by Kevin Smith (played ‘Dances & Arias’ by Edward Gregson) won:
* Overall Wessex Champion
* Championship Section
* Best march (they played ‘The Bomardier’ – T J Powell)
* Best instrumentalist – Ian Harris / Euphonium (although it was stated that this was a very close decision with Archie Musselwhite / Flugelhorn from Verwood Town Band giving him a run for his money!)
* Best cornet – Elaine Close
* Best trombone section – Emma Button, Bill Ferrier and Mike White.
Verwood Town Band conducted by Emma Button (played ‘Lake of the Moon’ by Houben) won:
* Best 4th section band
But . . . they came 3rd overall which is a fantastic result considering the band were graded the lowest on the day being a fourth section band and in coming 3rd they were placed higher than two 3rd section bands, two 2nd section bands and a 1st section band.
Congratulations to everyone involved.
Also many congratulations to all of the other bands taking part and the other prize winners. Plus a big thank you to the Wessex Brass Band Association for running the event.
