Verwood Concert Brass and Verwood Town Band once again took part in the annual West of England Regional Contest in Torquay last Sunday.

This year was the Town Band’s first year in the Second section having been promoted at the beginning of the year. Preparation for this contest took many hours of rehearsal and much hard work. The Town Band managed to get a very encouraging result of 3rd place at the Oxford contest two weeks ago. However they were fully aware that competing in Torquay would be a considerably more difficult challenge due the number of bands competing.

However as the results came through, everyone was in complete shock as it was announce that the 3rd prize goes to Verwood Town Band. Having only been promoted this year, it was completely unexpected and also meant another trip to Cheltenham race course for the National finals later in the year.

But it wasn’t just the Town Band who had a good result at the weekend. Verwood Concert Brass Principal Band manged to secure 4th place in the Championship section. Although narrowly missing out on a trip to the Albert Hall, the band were very happy with this result as the standard required at this level is very high.

The result of both bands is in huge part down to our musical director Kevin Smith who has worked relentlessly to get both bands through this weekend. But this was not all, as Kevin also conducted Michelmersh Silver Band in the First section and managed to secure 2nd place (also earning another trip to Cheltenham). Well done Michelmersh.

The bands were also happy to hear that Shaftesbury Town Band (conducted by our Soprano cornet player Martin Hill) managed to secure 3rd place in the Fourth section. Congratulations Shaftesbury.
