Saturday 4th November saw the Verwood Concert Brass Band and for the first time, Verwood Town Band, travel all the way up to Evesham to take part in the Wychavon Festival of Brass Entertainment Contest.

Most contests involve playing a particular designated ‘test’ piece of music, but this contest is different as each band puts on a 20-minute programme with the idea, as the name implies, to be entertaining (as well as playing superbly, of course). It’s like a whole day concert performed by around 65 bands who come from all over the country, so a lot of fun.

Verwood Town Band competed in the 3rd Section up against 16 other bands and the fantastic news is . . . they WON! Huge congratulations to all involved including Kevin Smith who also received some silverware as the winning conductor.

Verwood Concert Brass Band played in the Championship Section which involved a big field of 19 other bands. The band put in a great performance and came away with a very creditable 8th position.

All in all, it was a great day out with the opportunity for both bands to support each other and meet up with friends from other bands.
Huge praise for the organisers of the event and congratulations to the Roberts Bakery Band who took the top spot in the Championship Section and also well done to all the other bands who competed and made the day such a marvellous event.
